Inspiration from Jenny Holzer at the Tate Modern

Jenny Holzer at the Tate Modern  To get some inspiration for the coming project, I took a trip to the Tate Modern to see the Jenny Holzer exhibition. What I found particularly interesting about Holzers work is her investigation into the everyday that we encounter through language. By taking phrases from textbooks and placing them out of context they are forced to stand alone. I think this allows us in some way to understand them differently or to have a new lens on the reality of the messages that we use in everyday language, clichés and maxims. Holzer prints wallpaper with the sayings that surround you in a small enclosed space. this made me think about the power of language. She spatially grounds the way we use language in different ways throughout the exhibition, which allows different reflections of the same phrases in different contexts. perhaps this is mirroring the way that we respond to different tones, people speaking, printed language differently.   ...

Idea Focus meeting 06.02.19

We met to frame our intervention having had time to think more about our initial ideas. We further asked questions to ourselves as a way of clarifying our intentions and plan for our Thursday intervention! Q1: what is the intention of our intervention? A: to break the connection between the person and their smart phone to engage them in a dialogue about how they experience communication and transport Q2: Why? What is the core of what we are trying to find out? A: Are people actually satisfied with the way they communicate or do not communicate on public transport in bigger cities A: would you rather stay on your phone ad why? is this about anonymity, how we value relationships with people we don't know? A: what is the "space" of commuting? can we imagine it as a liminal space? how does this affect the code and social rules that we construct and experience on public transport? Initial group idea sprint

Initial group idea sprint 01.0219 Following two short exercises in commoning, we came together to share our initial thoughts about experiencing  every day  in a sprint project that was to result in an intervention. We took a timed 3 minutes alone to write on post-it notes to give us space to reflect upon what stood out for us each in our everyday experiences. After the 3Mins we recollected in order to share our reflections and discuss things we had in common and things that we experienced differently.
